Despite the proximity of Côte Rôtie, the geology is totally different. Here the bedrock is granite and the complexity comes from the variety of other geological elements added over the millennia. In order to minimise erosion, the vines - as at Ampuis - are grown along terraces supported by dry stone walls. Work has to be done by hand, requiring considerable manpower.
